Helping humans navigate the complexities of connectedness
At Hunky Monk Ministries we are passionate about designing and supporting experiences that help humans navigate the complexities of connectedness. We believe that humans, despite what might be going on in our internal and external worlds, truly want to connect with other humans. We are social beings that, due likely to our unique dimensions of diversity, life experiences, and conscious and unconscious programming seem to lose each other in miscommunication.
HMM is a team of facilitators and peacemakers who aim to create brave and joyful experiences that promote healing and learning, both at an individual and group level. And we believe that by changing ourselves and the communities in which we participate, we can also in our own unique ways, change the world.
If you had to put a label on The Ministry, you might call us life coaches, team builders, and organizational consultants. Choose the label that works for you. As we begin to build something new, we might continue to redefine ourselves. You are welcome to do the same!
Our dream is to create healing for all types of humans. But we understand the importance of taking even the most beautiful journey one step at a time. So, our first iteration of programming will be rooted in the experience of our core team - queer men of color in the San Francisco Bay Area and our allies. If you resonate with this description, you can expect:
We are excited to do small things in big ways and will share more about how you can get involved soon!
I'm not a fan of bragging on my credentials, as I hope you value what's in my heart at least equally to what's in my brain. HMM is a labor of love. It is my final step in breaking free from my own religious upbringing, internalized racism, and persistent internalized homophobia to express myself purely. It is also an attempt to create the same opportunities for pure expression in others.
My tree of being has San Francisco roots, New York branches, Texas leaves and Oakland flowers. The youngest child of a Pentecostal pastor, my first community was one that I'm sure loved me, but didn't quite accept or know me, which of course means they could not love me fully. It was prophesied that I would be a pastor myself someday, and I suppose in some ways that prophecy was fulfilled. Just not in the ways my family might have expected.
I spent over a decade designing and supporting programs for young people and their adult allies, building the capacity of HIV prevention and care organizations, and coaching nonprofit leaders and boards. On the flipside, I've spent the last decade as a management consultant and organizational psychologist; guiding executives at all levels in managing and compassionately leading their teams through complex and emotional changes.
Through these two decades of experience amidst an ever-shifting world, I've finally come to embrace my superpower: facilitating individuals and teams of all types through times of confusion and uncertainty. And being a goofball skilled in popular education and experiential learning doesn't hurt. Laughter heals the soul in a unique way that allows the heart to more effectively engage the brain.
I have no idea how these skills might translate to your life or situation. But I guarantee that we can do great things together!
